uPVC Door Repair vs Replace Cost | The Ten-Year Maths

Gearbox, cylinder or whole new door? Real costs compared over ten years so Stone homeowners can see which option actually makes sense.

A lot of homeowners in Walton and Oulton end up getting a full door quote when all they actually needed was a £90 gearbox. Salespeople aren't always rushing to tell you that. So here are the numbers, laid out plainly.

What Actually Wears Out on a uPVC Door

The door itself, the PVC frame and glass unit, can last thirty years without drama. What fails is the hardware inside it: the multipoint gearbox, the cylinder, and occasionally the handles or hinges. The frame sits there doing nothing interesting while the moving parts slowly give up.

Gearboxes, the long steel mechanism that runs up the edge of the door, take a beating every single time the door is locked. GU, Fuhr, Maco, Roto, Winkhaus, Mila, all good brands, all wearing parts. After seven to twelve years of daily use, the hooks or rollers start to stick, the keep alignment drifts, or the cam strip fails. That's when people notice the door won't lock smoothly, or only locks if they lift the handle hard.

Cylinders are even more finite. A standard euro cylinder has around 50,000 to 100,000 cycle ratings from reputable manufacturers. Five locks and unlocks a day is around 35,000 cycles in twenty years, so the cylinder often outlasts its quality. The problem is most doors in Stonefield and Christchurch still have the cheap chrome cylinders that came with the door in 2008. Snap-resistant, anti-pick, anti-bump, none of those features apply to a builder-grade cylinder. Replacing it with an Ultion or Avocet ABS TS007 3-star unit costs £60 to £110 fitted and is genuinely the single best-value security upgrade on a uPVC door.

The Numbers

ScenarioTypical cost (Stone area)Frequency over 10 years10-year total
Full door replacement (supply + fit)£900 to £1,800Once£900 to £1,800
Multipoint gearbox replacement£90 to £160 fittedOnce or twice£90 to £320
TS007 3-star cylinder upgrade£65 to £110 fittedOnce (replace at 7–10 yrs)£65 to £220
Handle set replacement£45 to £85 fittedOnce£45 to £85
Full service (gearbox + cylinder + handles)£180 to £280Once mid-decade£180 to £280
Repair route total (realistic)£270 to £600

The repair route costs somewhere between a quarter and a third of a new door, even if you need two gearboxes over the decade. A new door does not come with better security unless you specifically specify upgraded hardware. Most replacement doors in the £900 to £1,100 bracket ship with the same grade of cylinder the old door had.

When Replacement Is Actually the Right Call

There are genuine reasons to replace rather than repair.

  • The frame itself is cracked, warped beyond adjustment, or the thermal seal has failed and you're losing heat through the glass unit.
  • The door was never fitted correctly and the frame is out of plumb. Gearbox problems that come back within a year of a repair usually mean alignment, not the gearbox itself.
  • The door is a 1990s single-point lock design without a multipoint keep. Upgrading those is genuinely awkward and expensive.
  • You want a composite door. Entirely reasonable preference, and a different conversation.

Short of those, the maths favour repair. Solidly.

What to Spend the Saved Money On

If you're in Barlaston, Yarnfield or Meir Heath and the repair route saves you £700 against a replacement quote, that £700 is doing more security work as an Ultion cylinder (£90 fitted), a door chain rated to BS8621 (£35 to £55 fitted), a door viewer, and a properly adjusted strike plate with three-inch screws into the stud. The rest covers the gearbox on the back door.

A new door in a nice colour doesn't make your home harder to break into. Better hardware inside the existing door does.

One Quick Check Before You Call Anyone

Lift the handle fully before turning the key. If the door locks smoothly when you do that but drags without it, the issue is almost always gearbox wear or keep misalignment, not something catastrophic. That's a one-visit fix. If the cylinder is stiff regardless of the handle position, it's the cylinder. Both are inexpensive repairs when caught before they fail completely.

Questions people actually ask

Usually, yes. A dropped handle almost always means the spindle inside the gearbox has sheared or the mechanism has worn to the point where it can't hold the handle square. A replacement gearbox fitted costs £90 to £160 depending on the brand and model needed. GU, Fuhr and Maco are the most common in Staffordshire homes and parts are readily available. It's a one-visit job in most cases.
